Jean Moran is a weaver living in the Ennistymon. Being surrounded by the beauty of the natural world, influences Jean’s work on a deep level. She has an appreciation and love for Irish traditions, culture and heritage, and aims to contribute to, and preserve this, through her weaving. In her work, she looks to the past for traditional styles, yet creates pieces with an alternative, contemporary, unique, one-off twist. Jean loves colour and this can be seen in her work! She weaves creative, functional pieces such as scarves, throws, blankets, guitar straps and críos belts. Of the latter, she has created many unique, beautiful críoses for hand-fasting wedding ceremonies. She incorporates local fleece into her pieces, creating homespun rugs. She also loves to weave pieces of a more fine art style, such as wall hangings and framed weaves, where she approaches each piece like a painter’s composition. She is always delighted to weave bespoke commissions, fulfilling the individual’s taste and preference.
Jean has a BA in Textiles, and completed a nine month apprenticeship with Master Weaver Beth Moran in 2015. She has taught weaving to all levels, primary school students, art students, art college tutors at LCAD, and ETB Cork, and craft enthusiasts. She ran her own beautiful shop/studio/gallery on the Main Street in Ennistymon, Co Clare, for five years.
Aware of the environment, she aims to source materials that are natural, organic, ethical, and sourced locally as much as possible. She weaves with a wide range of fibres such as wool, homespun wool, alpaca, cotton, linen and silk.
